Colorful India [Wednesday, June 23 2010]

I know that most of my stories revolve around my drivers, but there's just so much to say.

The owner of the cab company, Manjeet, has been driving me recently. He always gets to my place at 9:15 a.m. It's like he's purposefully ignored the 9:00 a.m. pick-up time and shoots for the quarter hour only. Coming home he's like über prompt and is always having tea in the reception area by the time I get there.

I still like him better than the guy who doesn't know any shortcuts.

Also, I find it hilarious that there are so many speed bumps in the roads here. And what's even more funny is that the drivers slow down for the really low, smooth speed "humps," but they absolutely fly over the short, tall ones that make you bounce in your sea, almost hitting the ceiling. I don't think they really understand the concept.

So, today I was wearing a super sunny yellow kurta for work. I joked with the designers that no one was going to know what to do with me when I got back to the US. Everyone is so used to seeing me wearing black and dark colors…this change was just going to be too shocking. And here I'm so under dressed! I mean, I haven't even purchased the sparkly, sequined shirts that I constantly gravitate towards. I don't even think I can pull that off in India. It's just too much.

Nitra was finally back today, so it was really lovely to see her. I've already booked her time for Saturday. We're going back to Dilli Haat so I can buy more sandals. I only bought two pairs last time. Two pairs! I can't believe I did that, because I'm absolutely obsessed with these things. They are like cute enough to wear to work, but SO comfortable. Besides chatting with miss Nitra, I continued with my guerrilla photo shoots of the team. Today I surprise attacked Vivek and Anita.

After work, Ruchika and I went to the Metropolitan Mall because there was a shop I just had to go to. I was not disappointed! This place had the cutest clothes with all this embroidery and really cool stitching. I tried on about a million things, but ended up with four very adorable shirts. I can't believe how much shopping I've done. I mean, when I do the conversions, it's not horrible. But when you go to pay and someone tells you your total is Rs 5,000—well, it's a little frightening to hear.

After the mall, we walked over to TGIFridays. I was craving American food! After three days in a row of Punjabi by Nature, I seriously needed something else. It was so nice to spend some time with Ruchika. She's really great and—being new—I'm sure it's tough for her to completely integrate with the team. It's just really fun talking to her and I'm glad I had the opportunity to really chat outside of work.

I couldn't read on my way home, so I spend my time counting how many ice cream stands there were ont he side of the road going home. Final answer: 12. Yeah, 12 ice cream stands. Random. I also discovered that Manjeet is super obsessed with this one Hindi song, which he continued to play (and sing along to) over and over again. By the end of the cab ride, I was humming along. I think tomorrow I might join in. I just need to be careful. I don't need him asking me about tomato soup, too.
